Hamlin achieved his seventh victory at Pocono, marking a significant milestone as it was his 50th career win. Additionally, this triumph served as Toyota’s 600th NASCAR win. However, this achievement was not without its share of controversy.
After the final round of green flag stops, Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin – who both took just two new right-side tires – found themselves running first and second and battling for the lead on a restart with seven of 160 laps remaining.
Hamlin maneuvered his way inside Larson, veered towards the track, and lightly pushed Larson’s No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet against the wall. In response, Larson retaliated by forcefully slamming his door into Hamlin’s car while caution was in effect.
Hamlin managed to pass and take the lead, then successfully defended against Tylyer Reddick, who had made a pit stop for four new tires. Hamlin’s victory was secured when a caution was called on the final lap.
Before Hamlin returned his No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota to the frontstretch for celebration, fans were already expressing their disapproval with loud boos and even throwing bottles onto the track.
