The session began with a track that was not wet, but Sergio Perez from Red Bull had a crash after only three minutes at Turn 5. This caused the session to be stopped, and no significant lap times were recorded.

He made a mistake by veering off the track before turning, causing him to spin and crash into the tyrewall. This collision resulted in significant damage to the front-left corner of the car and also affected the team’s recent improvements. “I can’t believe I did this,” he expressed his disbelief regarding his mistake.

After the session resumed, rain started falling, which led to Valtteri Bottas losing control of his Alfa Romeo car equipped with slick tires and spinning at Turn 12.

Due to the unfavorable conditions, there was minimal running and all cars switched to intermediate tires. Carlos Sainz caused a second red flag by spinning his Ferrari on the exit of Turn 3 and becoming stranded on the grass.

After the race resumed, Russell and Oscar Piastri from McLaren took turns setting the fastest time. Russell emerged victorious in their competition, beating Piastri by 0.359s with a time of 1m38.795s. Lance Stroll secured the third fastest time for Aston Martin, followed by Norris in the second McLaren, Alonso in the second Aston Martin, and Bottas.

Seven drivers failed to set a time, including Max Verstappen, Perez, Sainz, Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and returnee Daniel Ricciardo (AlphaTauri). The latter’s new team-mate, Yuki Tsunoda, also inflicted some front-wing damage on his car after an off at Turn 5.
